Pump Up the Volume
By Steve Morgenstern
A new headset that ensures your voice will be heard
BASED ON TECHNOLOGY developed for desperate traders on the cacophonous floor of the New York Stock Exchange, theBoom noise-Canceling headset ($150; theboom.com) does an amazing job of eliminating background noise while you speak on your cellphone -- whether you're whizzing along in a convertible or walking on a busy street, the person on the other end will still hear you loud and clear.
It even works if your voice is bar4ely a whisper. The system uses a two-port microphone housing: Background sound waves are cancelled out by dual front and rear mikes, while your voice, which hits only the front, is amplified. The featherweight earpiece-microphone combo comes with adapters to fit most cellphones (including those with a standard 2.5-millimeter jack and several proprietary Nokia and Motorola models), and the flexible rubber-and-magnesium construction allows precision adjustment to fit individual users.
